Coronavirus and remote learning (2021-2022)
Protection and control measures
Following the easing of coronavirus restrictions, from September 2021, The Bliss Charity School will dispense with ‘bubbles’ and staggered timetables. However, other protection and control measures – including ensuring occupied spaces are well-ventilated, the continuation of additional cleaning, regular handwashing and sanitising and the promotion of good respiratory hygiene (‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’) – will remain in place. Face coverings are no longer advised for staff or visitors either in classrooms or in communal areas, although adults may choose to wear these in enclosed or crowded spaces should they wish to.
Testing, close contact and self-isolation
If your child develops any of the following three coronavirus symptoms, even if mild, they must self-isolate straight away and have a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test as soon as possible:
- a high temperature
- a new, continuous cough
- lost their sense of smell or taste, or it’s changed
If the PCR test is positive, remote education will be provided for your child whilst they complete their isolation period (self-isolation is for 10 days from the day after symptoms began).
Since mid-August, pupils are not required to self-isolate if they live in the same household as someone with coronavirus, or are a close contact of someone with coronavirus. Those identified as a close contact will be informed by NHS Test and Trace that they have been in close contact with a positive case and advised to take a PCR test. There is no requirement to self-isolate while awaiting PCR test results in these circumstances so individuals can continue to attend school as usual.
If your child takes a rapid Lateral Flow Device (LFD) test and the result is positive, they will need to self-isolate until a PCR test is taken and the result is negative. If the PCR test is taken within 2 days of the positive LFD test, and is negative, it overrides the LFD test and the pupil can return to school, as long as the individual doesn’t have coronavirus symptoms.

If a child tests positive for coronavirus but is well enough to learn from home, remote learning will be provided. Similarly, remote learning will be provided if attendance is temporarily restricted under the Department for Education’s Contingency Framework.
What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being at home?
A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching. Whilst teachers are making these preparations, please access the ‘Learning at Home Resources’ on the class pages of our website. These tasks all link to work children have been doing in class.
Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?
Teachers will ensure that the learning that is made available via the Microsoft Teams platform is a version of the class curriculum that they would have been taught in school. However, only content that can be delivered and accessed whilst learning at home will be added. This means that some components of lessons and some whole subjects will not be included.
How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?
We expect that the remote education provided will take pupils approximately 3-4 hours each day (3 hours for Key Stage 1 and 4 hours for Key Stage 2).
It is important to remember that the same tasks in school might take longer – lessons usually include lots of questioning and discussion as well as independent work.
We advise that you follow a school routine if possible, building in regular breaks for your child at home to replicate those in a normal school day.
How will my child access any online remote education we are providing?
At The Bliss Charity School, we use Microsoft Teams as our online learning platform. Children have their own log-in details in their reading records. More information on how to access Teams will be sent home when it is needed and is available in our ‘Microsoft Teams User Guide’ below.
If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. For this reason, our online approach to remote education is as inclusive as possible. At The Bliss Charity School, all remote education lessons are provided in a pre-recorded video format which enables families to access the content when a device/connection is available.
In addition, the school office is on hand to resolve access issues, either by arranging access to a suitable device or coming up with an alternative platform/format that is more suited to your circumstances, which might include printed resources instead.
How will my child be taught remotely?
- Daily ‘assignments’ will be set using the Microsoft Teams platform.
- Each assignment will contain an explanation of the task – in writing, in a short video by the teacher or via a useful web-link.
- Teachers will provide any resources children need to complete an activity.
- Teachers will consider the ability of all pupils in the class, ensuring different levels of work are available for children to access.
- Teachers will ensure that the learning that is made available via the Microsoft Teams platform is as close as possible to the class curriculum that would have been taught were your child in school.
- Feedback will be provided in a timely manner on all submitted assignments.
- Subsequent activities will be based on what teachers can see from submitted assignments.
- Further support from the teacher and teaching assistant can be sought through the Microsoft Teams platform.
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents/carers should provide at home?
- Help your child access Microsoft Teams and the relevant assignments.
- Encourage your child to maintain a school routine whilst learning at home.
- Seek support from the school office regarding access arrangements should it be needed.
- Upload completed work – this could be a file/document or a photo of the work your child does.
- Respect the work-life balance of teachers and teaching assistants, only contacting them within office hours.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
Assignments are set on a daily basis with a suggested time for completion given. Teachers will then be able to see who has submitted work and therefore who has engaged with each task. Where there is a concern about pupil engagement, parents will be contacted by the office/teaching staff to find out what further support can be offered to support children’s engagement with their learning.
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
We will aim to give children feedback on all pieces of work which are submitted. This may take the form of a brief positive comment or, for longer pieces of work, comments might be more detailed, also giving areas for further development. All feedback given will be follow the school marking policy. For some tasks, the answers may be given for children to check themselves.
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents/carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
- All assignments that teachers set on Microsoft Teams will take into account the ability levels of all children within the class.
- For children with SEND, the challenge levels given within the tasks might mean they are able to access the work. At other times, different assignments or resources might be provided for one child or a group of children either by the teacher or teaching assistant.
- Teachers and teaching assistants will work closely with families of children with SEND to ensure work is accessible and to encourage children to remain motivated.
- The school office is also able to offer support to families struggling to access resources etc.
If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?
In these circumstances, the learning that is made available via the Microsoft Teams platform will be a version of the class curriculum taught that day. Only content that can be delivered and accessed whilst learning at home will be added. This means that some components of lessons and some whole subjects that took place in school will not be included.
In addition, teacher/ teaching assistant availability will be far more limited as they will be responsible for teaching the majority of the class in school. Please contact the school office during the day if you are having any problems with accessing work or need any other support.
